Brewery pays out $1 million in Oktoberfest betting!

A Munich brewery has reportedly paid out over $1 million in bets made during Oktoberfest. The bets were placed on a variety of activities, including the traditional horse race that takes place at the festival.

The brewery, Hofbräuhaus, is thought to have taken in around €2.5 million (£2.2 million) in bets over the two-week festival. This is thought to be down to the fact that the odds were particularly favourable for punters on some events, such as the horse race.

This year's race saw significant sums wagered, with one gambler betting €10,000 (£8,940) on a horse that eventually came second. The overall winner of the race took home over €100,000 (£89,410), so there was plenty of money at stake.

Bets were also placed on other traditional activities at Oktoberfest, such as tug-of-war and stein-lifting competitions. It is not yet clear how much Hofbräuhaus has had to pay out in total, but it is thought that it could be as much as €1 million (£890,000).

This is not the first time that a Munich brewery has had to pay out big sums of money following Oktoberfest. In 2016, Löwenbräu reportedly had to pay out over €2 million (£1.8 million) in bets placed during the festival.
